Years ago, actually decades ago, I took a course on edible wild plants. We would meet in the evening, around 6 p.m., then drive out to Isle Perreault. It was summertime, and it was full of mosquitoes and other very hungry critters. The teacher wore a full mesh protective garment, head to foot, others used bug spray. I simply ate crushed raw garlic with my supper. Not one bite; they really don’t like garlic! However, you may not want the intense scent of garlic pouring out of your pores, so here is an alternative.

This is a very simple recipe; I bring my spray bottle when I go for walks on the island behind the condo.

  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup distilled water (or witch hazel)

20-30 drops insect repelling essential oil such as eucalyptus, cedarwood, neem oil, lavender, rosemary, citronella, tea tree, peppermint, any mint, cypress, rose geranium, bergamot, lemon, litsea cubeba (any lemon or mint scent)
